The eighties fashion trend-setters tried so many different looks in the 80s. There were as many
different trends and fashion styles, as there were individuals with active imaginations. 80s
fashion was no longer a combination of clothes and accessories, but the mirror of a rapidly and
continuously changing society.
There were, of course, many who
looked terrible, running around in outfits that appeared to have been retrieved from a dumpster.
But anything goes was the motto of the 1980s where clothes were concerned. In the 1980’s decade
it seemed that everyone wanted to set themselves apart from the rest, whether old or young. It
was more about making your mark and being flashy, than looking good.
The Eighties brought a whole
new genre of clothing, music, movies, and other things that are now still around. While I
applaud the fact that eighties fashion has had staying power and is making a big splash in the
21st century, I do not wish to see 90’s "grunge" ever come back in style.
Eighties
fashion is almost as big as it was in the 1980s, but the question remains what
exactly is 80s fashion.
Eighties fashion trend-setters
like Madonna and Cindy Lauper create a mental image of what eighties fashion and style were. For
a more detailed look at eighties fashion and many great examples of the style, one only needs to
watch a few of the classic John Hughes movies from the eighties.
Movies such as Weird Science,
Sixteen Candles, Pretty in Pink, and Fast times at Ridgemont High are loaded with all sorts of
different styles from the 1980s. In fact, many of these movies are entertaining just for the
fashions, even though they are classics in their own right.
Besides Madonna and Cindi
Lauper, who both stand out as fashion trend-setters of the 1980s, some other great eighties
fashion icons to think about for women's style are Molly Ringwald, Janet Jackson, Pat Benatar,
and Bananarama.
Duran Duran led the the way in
the eighties for dress and style. Many men emulated Bruce Springsteen's style, Billy Idol or
Michael Jackson.
So, as you can see, to think
about eighties fashion as on style can be misleading at the very least. There were truly so many
styles, types and colors of eighties fashion that it becomes hard to even pin it down to
eighties fashion.
The 1980's decade also offered many television shows, such as Miami
Vice, Family Ties and Married with children that are just loaded with eighties clothes and
styles.
