Parapsychology: What is it?
Parapsychology is the organized study of different phenomena that other, more traditional branches of science have been unable to explain. It usually deals with “anomalies”, or various unusual and unexplained events associated with the human experience.
What Do Parapsychologists Study?
The various “anomalies” which the field of parapsychology deals with often fall under one of the basic categories of parapsychology phenomena. These categories often include:
Mental telepathy, or events that suggest the possibility of a “mind-to-mind” influence. In layman’s terms, it is often known as “mind-reading”.
Extra-Sensory Perception more commonly known as ESP, or the ability to obtain different kinds of information that would otherwise be impossible to possess or gain access to through the use of an individual’s basic senses.
Hauntings, which consist of various unexplained occurrences that involve apparitions, strange sounds or noises, and movements that seemingly take place without an obvious source or stimulus.
Since its conception the field of parapsychology has been the center of much debate, criticism, and controversy. Having its share of skeptics, some would refer to it as a “pseudoscience”. Still, a fair number of scientists find parapsychology worthy of analysis.
