Figuring Out  How to Cater a Party

So you are going to cater your own party and are wondering how to make sure it's successful. Read here for some great tips.

Figuring out how much food you'll need to supply at the party is of course very important. You don't want to run out, but you don't want left overs for 2 weeks either! Firstly, it's a good idea to get a membership to a big retail store like Costco or Sam's Club if you don't already have one. You may pay for the entire membership with the savings you'll get with the one shopping trip for the party. A good rule to follow is to calculate as if everyone will under eat, or eat a small meal. You'll have those people who eat a lot, and even more people who just tend to pick a little at everything. It usually amounts to calculating for a small meal for each person.

For beginner courses and snacks, it's a good idea to get some old stand-by snacks such as cheese and crackers. Don't be afraid to throw in some other options that says something about your tastes. You can get a sense of pride and connect with people who like what you have provided. Just don't count on everyone liking it and give people choices! There are some nice ready made platters and vacuum sealed cheeses at most stores.

The approach to serving alcoholic beverages is obviously dependent on the crowd that will be attending. If you are going to get a boxed wine, make sure it's a boxed wine that people will say, "I didn't know boxed wine could be so good!" You can get many cheap bottles that are lesser known and still of good quality. Keep in mind that liquor stores will give discounts for buying 12 bottles. As for beer, make sure to accommodate for the sophisticated beer drinkers with some micro brews along with the cheaper domestic brands.

As for displaying the food and keeping it warm, you'll need a (or a couple) folding banquet tables, some aluminum pans, cans of heating gel, and some chaffing racks. Prevent the food from burning in these with putting 2 aluminum pans on the chaffing racks with a little water in between them. Utensils and platters are easy enough to get at any store or be ready to do some dishes the next day!
