How the high street interprets the haute coutures' whims and fancies is always an interesting prospect and Spring 2008 is no different. The colours, fabrics and shapes are mixed and matched then reduced to a budget that most can afford.
Trying to predict the outcome is a risky business but there are some indicators that show what will be the hot items for 2008.
Organic materials, like hemp, sustainable cotton or bamboo, will continue to make their presence felt but the colours will become brighter, shifting away from the worthy earth mother type dyes. In complete contrast techno materials will also become a small but significant part of the fashion scene, allowing for a distinct and practical range of clothing that conceal some amazing surprises.
With the coming Olympics in Beijing, expect to see an offering of tunics and 'pyjama' styled suits in both solid and patterns and you will be able to pick a luxurious satin or silk number for the evening or a practical cotton for the day in colours that reflect the Eastern magic.
If there is any truth in the rumour that house prices are reflected in the length of the skirt, prepare for the worse because they will be worn longer in 2008 in styles that hark back to by-gone eras of style and taste. Look out for that Katherine Hepburn look with high waisted, pleated pants or suits but always buy the best materials to keep up their stylish looks. Pencil skirts are also not going away, but there will be a range of lustrous top to wear with them.
Evening wear may give something more alluring prospects, with asymmetrical and sack dresses making a statement.
There has been a set of mini shorts designed for men but away from the beach, only the most dedicated fashionistas will be wearing those, the rest will be in suits that hug the body and sports jackets, ties get thinner. The ubiquitous baseball cap that has been around for so long now will begin to decline, as men, having got used to wearing a hat again seek out something more stylish. Watch out for a rash of Panamas this summer.
Colours will depend on the mood, the optimists will be looking at ranges of reds, silvers, brighter blues and purples with a dashing hint of neon whilst the pessimists will be using a much more muted range which can be overcome by introducing some bright snazzy accessories which will be available in the new year.
2008 will be an exciting mix of old and new that will have something for everyone, roll on the new year. |
