Concept Car

You might recall the chopped out Ferrari in Harold and Maude: the morose malcontent with nothing but money and time modified a Ferrari to look like part-hearse…or modified a hearse to look like part-Ferrari. If you want to see some true concept cars, you should check out the artistic endeavors of Photoshoppers at worth1000.com.

The site is a photo manipulation site: with contests, tutorials, forums, and galleries, the site features thousands of Photoshop-altered images. So what you will find will be montages in every category—from bad ads to bichon fries, from childhood renaissance to chocolate, from what lies beneath to we’ll make great pictures to zip it to zero gravity. Among the thousands of creative, clever categories is one called dream vehicles. There, the artists have merged two prevailing images to come up with a concept car that is funny, sexy, useful, classic, efficient, or just plain strange.

Some of the concept car images are fascinating to look at: there’s the Pontiac with wings, soaring against a sunset; the VW/boat/helicopter, cruising over the keys; and there’s the Ferrari submerged deep in the bluest of seas. Included in the collection are the unusual combinations—the cross-breeding of a high end sports car with a covered wagon; the merging of a car and full bar; and the melding of an ambulance and race car.

Next there are the futuristic visions, merged images that include The Quantum Leap Porsche; the Hover Pod with neon underglow; and the Holden Vectra Ute.

The latter, then, are the closest to the visions of the concept car designed by the automotive pros, vehicles that retain the characteristics of a land vehicle but merge two or more vehicles, cloning the best of parts and lines: while you will have to see these shots for justice to be done to the artistic genius, I’ll direct you to consider the beautiful red Chevy SSX; the stealth and extensive properties of the Hummer Limousine; the SUV Corvette marriage; the re-conceived Audi; and the VW joined with the tank.

I have no affiliation with (though much affinity for) worth1000.com. Just wanted to share some stunning art and comment on the appeal for concept car fans. In addition, would direct you to the Auto Channel, Motors TV, and other automotive shows for the latest in the sleek, the swirling, the soaring, and the sliding concept cars, those that combine the throwback traits with the futuristic visions only a creative and progressive-thinking mind can conjure.
